During the evening hours of November 20, 2017, deputies responded to 1200 block of Ridge Road, in Lincoln County, to check on the wellbeing of an 11-year-old male who was thought missing after a community tip was receive that the child’s guardian was looking for him and had not notified police.
After several hours, deputies located the missing male along the 1800 block of Highway W, in Foley. Deputies learned the male’s guardian 56-year-old Irene Denise Arias, of Lincoln County, had called a family friend to pick up the child and neglect may be involved within victim’s home.
Detectives learned the male victim would often stay at Arias home alone, without care, and the residence did not have running water for several months. The victim told investigators water was often stolen from neighbors. In addition, the victim told investigators he was taught how to steal and even take food into a bathroom for consumption without paying.
During the male victim’s forensic interview, Arias and others would smoke marijuana in the residence and the male may stay in the care of others he barely knew because Arias was never home.
Detectives located and took Arias into custody. During an interview, Arias admitted during an interview to smoking marijuana in the residence with the child inside. Arias also admitted to sending the victim to the residence for water but denied teaching him how to steal.
Arias is charged with felony Neglect of a Child and misdemeanor Unlawful Transaction with Child and is currently housed in the Lincoln County Jail under a $5,000 or 10% cash or surety bond. Other conditions of bond may apply.
