In early April 2017, detectives with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the theft of two firearms in Elsberry. According to investigators, 33-year-old Terell Mathis, of Elsberry, was actively selling methamphetamine from his home along the 100 block of Mark Avenue, in Elsberry.
According to a cooperative source working with law enforcement, the individual traded Mathis a stolen .22 caliber revolver and stolen P38 9mm handgun in exchange for methamphetamine and to make good on a prior debt. With this information, detectives received and executed a search warrant at Mathis residence.
Investigators found sales receipts for the weapons in a black lock box signed by a female. The female was identified as Mathis girlfriend who admitted to signing the bills of sale. The girlfriend told detectives Mathis asked her to sign the bill of sale for the firearms because of his criminal record.
Investigator learned Mathis sold multiple handguns and rifles over several months to multiple people. Mathis is currently housed in the Lincoln County Jail for previous narcotics and firearm charges.
Mathis is charged additionally with four Felony Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and two counts of Felony Unlawful Transfer of a Weapon to a Felon or Incompetent Person and is housed under a $100,000 cash only bond. Other conditions of bond may apply.
