LINCOLN COUNTY MAN CHARGED FOR SHOOTING SON

Richard Phillips

On Sunday, March 20, deputies responded to a domestic assault shots fired call along the 6000 block of Copperhead Lane, in unincorporated Lincoln County. When deputies arrived, suspect 61-year-old Richard Phillips, of Lincoln County, was standing on his porch. After a short verbal confrontation, Phillips was taken into custody and transported to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.

Deputies located a 26-year-old male victim at a nearby neighbor’s house suffering a gunshot wound to his back. The male was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

According to Phillips, his son was drinking all day, “acting disrespectful and wearing his pants too low”. At some point, Phillips told his son to leave the residence at which his son flipped their table over. Phillips told investigators, he grabbed his .38 caliber handgun and shot his son.

Phillips then told investigators his son asked what just happened and he responded, “I shot you, that’s what happened.” Phillips then called 911 and requested an ambulance.

On Monday, March 21, investigators spoke with the victim at Mercy Hospital. The victim who told investigators him and his father started arguing when Phillips grabbed his .38 caliber revolver from his boot. The victim said he flipped the kitchen table over to create a barricade when his father shot him.

Fearing for his life, the victim fled the residence and ran to a neighbor’s house. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

Phillips is currently charged with First Degree Assault and Armed Criminal Action. Phillips is currently housed in the Lincoln County Jail under a $500,000.00 cash only bond. Other conditions of bond may apply.
