Man Charged in the Murder of a 2 Year Old Boy

On Thursday morning, August 18, 2011 Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detectives responded to the Lincoln County Medical Center after being notified a toddler was being treated for a head injury. The toddler is identified as, 2-year-old, Demetrius T. Washington Jr.

At approximately 10:15 am that morning, Washington Jr. was pronounced dead at the Lincoln County Medical Center.

Washington Jr. was living with his mother, Melissa M. McKeage, and her boyfriend, Douglas Clayton Rivette, at 11 Two Pine Drive in Troy. Rivette told investigators he tripped walking out the front door of his residence, and as a result struck Washington Jr. from behind causing him to fall down the front porch steps.

On Friday, August 19, 2011, Dr. Mary Case performed a forensic medical examination on Washington Jr. concluding he died from internal bleeding caused by massive blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Dr. Case advised the injuries were consistent with Washington Jr. being punched or kicked and ruled the manner of death a homicide.

Lincoln County Detectives brought Rivette in for questioning. After being confronted with evidence that conflicted with his original story, Rivette confessed to kicking Washington Jr. in the abdomen. Rivette has been charged with Murder 1st Degree or The Alternative Felony Murder, Abuse of A child – Resulting in Death, and Armed Criminal Action. He is being held at the Lincoln County Jail in lieu of a $1,000,000 cash only bond set by the Honorable Judge Beck.
